Hi Rachel

Yes, you say she is a bit ploddy...so firstly you have to get her in front of your leg. You will need to work on an effective transition aid, she must go off your leg, wen you ask, and if she doesnt you must give her a sharp kick, or tap with the whip so she understands that you mean business. Once you have hjer understanding the aid to go forwards..hen you can ride a sequenc of wlaktrot then canter trot transitions, to sharpen her up and make her listen to you. A very good exercise is to canter 5 strides and walk (or trot if your horse is not good at canter walk transitions yet) 5 strides then repeat at least 5 times around a circle. The horse will start to expect the transition after a few sets of 5 and will wake up and think more forwards.

Other ways to get your horse more forwards....ride behind an more experienced horse, but dont get too close when doing this, keep at least 6 strides between you if possible.

Check your horses diet, do they have enough energy food, ask your local feed merchant or horse feed supplier, they will be very happy to discuss feed stuffs with you.

Hope some of these suggestions are helpful. Good Luck

One other quick thing Rebecca...the secret to a good jumping seat is do nothing....a good strong steady lower leg and then appraoch the fence in a light forward seat and follow the horse over the jump in the forward seat and land in the light forward seat and ride forward, sounds basic, and it is!! Poor jumping position is often created by riders trying to do too much. If you find yourself standing up too much in the jump position ( as shown in your photo) try a little juming over very small jumps with no stirrups or just one stirrup. (caution if you do this exercise, make sure you have someone on hand in case you get into difficulty, in fact it is always a good idea to have someonw on the groun wdhen you are jumping, to both help wiht fences and make sure if anything goes wrong, help is to hand)
